On the 25th anniversary of the Panama Canal’s transfer to Panamanian control, a solemn ceremony took place on the steps of the iconic Administration Building, marking a day filled with symbolism and pride.

The event commenced with a procession led by school bands, marching from the Eternal Flame monument to the Administration Building, setting the tone for the commemorative occasion.

Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales highlighted the key milestones achieved over the past 25 years. “Through three different administrations, we’ve shared a common mission: to ensure the Canal’s safe and continuous operation for the world. First, we proved Panamanians could successfully manage it, then we reaffirmed our dedication with the expansion and construction of the third set of locks. We could not afford to fall behind,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Vásquez emphasized the importance of sustainability, securing adequate water resources for both the Canal and Panama, and diversifying activities to enhance the value of this strategic route. He also stressed the need to invest in human talent and technological advancements to meet future challenges.

Minister for Canal Affairs, José Ramón Icaza, underscored the collective effort that has kept the Canal as a vital pillar of Panama’s economy. He expressed pride in the progress made during these 25 years of sovereignty and outlined the vision for the future. “While we celebrate our accomplishments, we also look ahead with determination, ensuring that the Panama Canal remains a bridge connecting the world and fostering prosperity for our nation and trading partners,” said Icaza. He further highlighted plans for new infrastructure, expanded operational capacity, and responsible water management as part of the Canal’s long-term sustainability strategy.

President José Raúl Mulino addressed the nation during the ceremony, reflecting on the historical significance of the Canal and its role as a symbol of national pride. “Since the transfer, the Canal has been a source of pride, not only for Panamanians but as a model for the world. Under our management, it has continued to grow and drive international trade along a path of progress. Rest assured, the Canal will remain in Panamanian hands forever,” Mulino remarked.

A particularly emotional moment came when Miguel Guerra, the first Panamanian of Ngöbe Buglé heritage hired after the Canal’s transfer in 1999, was recognized for his contributions. President Mulino awarded him the prestigious Order of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, honoring the efforts of all Canal workers who have been instrumental in its successful operations.

As part of the celebrations, a commemorative plaque was unveiled to honor 25 years of Panamanian management—an enduring symbol of Panama’s leadership and vision in overseeing this critical trade route.

The event reaffirmed Panama’s commitment to ensuring the Canal’s safety, efficiency, and global relevance, showcasing the competence and dedication of the Panamanian people in managing one of the world’s most essential maritime passages.
