The Panama Canal Authority and Monjasa, a leading global marine fuels supplier, have signed a five-year Cooperation Agreement aimed at promoting sustainability and community-focused initiatives in areas connected to the Panama Canal Watershed. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to creating long-term environmental and social value through collaborative action.
Under the agreement, both organizations will work together on projects related to environmental protection, education, community development, culture, and overall well-being, with initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These efforts will primarily benefit communities within the watershed, while also extending to other parts of the country.
The accord was signed by Ilya Espino de Marotta, Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal, and Rasmus Jacobsen, Managing Director of Monjasa Americas. According to the Canal Authority, the alliance is designed to support joint projects that integrate the three core dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social, and governance (ESG). It also includes actions linked to decarbonization, emissions reduction, volunteer programs, and community engagement, in line with the International Maritime Organization’s objectives.
During the signing ceremony, representatives from both organizations emphasized the importance of joining forces to promote development models that reduce environmental impact, create shared value, and contribute to a more resilient economy. The projects will be carried out in accordance with the strategies, capacities, and legal frameworks of each party.
With this new agreement, the Panama Canal Authority continues to strengthen partnerships that support sustainable development while reinforcing its broader commitment to responsible growth, environmental stewardship, and positive engagement with surrounding communities.
