The Panama Canal has officially launched a new training program for the next generation of its firefighting force, reinforcing its commitment to safety, emergency preparedness, and operational excellence. A group of 20 candidates has been selected to take part in the intensive eight-month training process, which is designed to equip them with the knowledge and practical skills required to respond effectively to a wide range of emergency situations.

According to the Panama Canal Authority, the program combines both theoretical and hands-on instruction in areas such as first aid, hazardous materials handling, maritime emergency response, high-angle rescue, and rotations through the Canal’s different fire stations. The training is intended to prepare recruits for the demanding responsibilities of protecting one of the world’s most strategic maritime routes.

Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales emphasized that the selection process carries a strong sense of responsibility, particularly in terms of teamwork and communication, which are essential for the effective operation of the firefighting corps. He noted that all participants successfully completed a rigorous evaluation process that included English and swimming tests, as well as physical, psychological, and personal interviews, ensuring that only the most qualified candidates were chosen for this critical role.

The new class also marks a historic milestone for the Canal’s firefighting service, as for the first time, a woman has joined the group of firefighter trainees, representing an important step forward in inclusion and gender equity within the institution. Fire Department Manager Omar Vanterpool said this generation will play a vital role in the strategic changes planned for the coming years, including the creation of three new stations in Gamboa, Monte Esperanza, and Cocolí.

The launch event also included the participation of Deputy Administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta, Human Capital Vice President Rubén Pérez, Operations Vice President Boris Moreno, and special guests. The initiative reflects the Panama Canal’s continued efforts to strengthen operational capacity and talent development while upholding the highest standards of safety, readiness, and public service.
