Panama Canal Administrator Dr. Ricaurte Vásquez Morales took part in the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) Shipping Conference and Expo 2026, where he shared updates on the Canal’s infrastructure agenda and the strategic initiatives shaping its long-term role in global trade. During the event, he outlined how these projects are intended to strengthen the waterway’s reliability, competitiveness, and resilience in a rapidly evolving maritime landscape.

Speaking during a panel moderated by CNBC Senior Maritime and Global Supply Chain Correspondent Lori Ann LaRocco, Vásquez presented the Canal Authority’s Vision 2035, which focuses on enhancing competitiveness and sustainability. He explained that the strategy includes projects aimed at expanding capacity and creating complementary ways to move cargo across Panama, while preserving Canal transit capacity and reinforcing the country’s role as a transshipment hub through the development of a new container terminal.

Vásquez also highlighted the Río Indio Lake project, which is designed to increase water availability and improve the long-term reliability of Canal operations. By expanding water storage capacity, the initiative is expected to strengthen operational stability and provide greater resilience in the face of climate-related challenges. He noted that this investment is key to improving water management and ensuring the Canal can continue to serve global trade efficiently.

Following the panel, the Canal Administrator joined Seatrade Maritime Middle East Correspondent Gary Howard for a broader discussion on the Canal’s future projects, decarbonization strategy, sustainability initiatives, and long-term capacity outlook. During the conference, Vásquez also shared recent transit data showing that Canal revenues in the first five months of fiscal year 2026 were approximately 8% to 10% higher than during the same period in 2025, driven by growth in both vessel traffic and cargo volumes.

He also addressed the Canal’s decarbonization efforts, including the NetZero Slot program, which is designed to encourage vessels using lower-emission fuels and cleaner technologies. The initiative forms part of the Panama Canal Authority’s broader commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s transition toward more sustainable operations while maintaining service efficiency and reliability.
