The Panama Canal has announced new maximum draft adjustments for vessels transiting the Neopanamax locks as part of its ongoing water management and operational strategy. Beginning on August 26, 2026, the maximum authorized draft will be reduced to 48 feet (14.63 meters), followed by a further adjustment to 47.5 feet (14.48 meters) starting on September 3, 2026.

According to the Panama Canal Authority, the decision is based on current conditions and projected water levels in Gatún Lake over the coming weeks. The adjustments are intended to support the long-term sustainability of Canal operations while ensuring that the waterway continues to provide safe and reliable service to the international maritime industry.

The Authority emphasized that the new draft limits will not affect the number of daily vessel transits. The measure forms part of a broader water conservation strategy that has been in place since December 2025, when the Canal began implementing preventive measures in preparation for the 2026 dry season.

These latest changes represent the fourth and fifth draft adjustments announced by the Panama Canal. The Authority said its planning incorporates lessons learned from the challenging 2023–2024 period, together with hydrological data, historical records, and technical projections that support operational decision-making.

Canal specialists continue to closely monitor climate conditions and develop technical forecasts to better assess the potential effects of El Niño. This ongoing analysis allows the Panama Canal to anticipate changing water conditions and announce additional management measures when necessary, helping protect both the reliability of maritime operations and the responsible use of the country’s water resources.
