The Panama Canal has launched a new Apprenticeship Program as part of its long-term strategy to develop technical talent, promote intergenerational knowledge transfer, and strengthen the institutional succession needed to sustain operations in the years ahead. The initiative was officially announced on April 14, 2026.
The program begins with an initial group of 75 apprentices and is being carried out through the Industrial and Safety School of the Canal’s Talent Academy. According to the Panama Canal Authority, the program combines practical training, discipline, and specialized guidance in key trades essential to the operation and maintenance of the interoceanic waterway.
Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales said the Apprenticeship Program not only responds to the institution’s workforce needs, but also creates opportunities for Panamanians to gain tools for personal and professional success. The Canal noted that over the next decade it expects to incorporate around 3,000 new employees, particularly in technical and operational areas, making the program a key component in preserving high operating standards and ensuring the continuity of critical institutional knowledge.
Human Capital Vice President Rubén Pérez explained that the program forms part of a broader strategy to equip the Canal with the talent required for generational renewal. He said the Talent Academy was designed as the central platform to prepare the future workforce that will help guarantee the institution’s long-term operational continuity.
As part of the launch ceremony, the Canal held a symbolic helmet presentation by trade, marking the beginning of a path defined by learning, commitment, and professional growth. The event also featured Enrique Sánchez Salmón, a member of the Canal’s Board of Directors, who shared his own experience of having started his career at the institution as an apprentice in an earlier version of the program.
He told the new participants that he had entered the Canal as an apprentice 56 years ago, highlighting how technical training can become the foundation for a long and meaningful professional career. With this initiative, the Panama Canal reinforces its commitment to talent development, technical excellence, and the continuity of one of the world’s most strategic maritime operations.
