he Panama Canal has introduced a new low-emission transit initiative designed to encourage cleaner shipping and support the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts. The program, known as the NetZero Slot, will reserve a dedicated weekly transit opportunity for Neopanamax vessels that meet specific environmental criteria, reinforcing the Canal’s broader sustainability strategy.

According to the reports, the program is scheduled to begin in October 2025, with one weekly slot made available to qualifying vessels. Unlike the Canal’s traditional auction-based reservation system, this slot will be assigned through a competitive process focused on environmental performance and vessel characteristics.

In its initial phase, eligible vessels must be dual-fuel capable and able to operate on at least one fuel with a carbon intensity of 75 gCO2e/MJ or lower. Qualifying fuel options include alternatives such as green methanol, green ammonia, bio-LNG, and bio-LPG, reflecting the Canal’s effort to recognize vessels investing in cleaner technologies even before broader fuel infrastructure becomes widely available.

The selected vessel will benefit from added operational advantages, including the ability to choose its transit date within the assigned week, a guaranteed 24-hour transit time, and inclusion in the Just-in-Time (JIT) service. These incentives are intended to reward early adopters of low-carbon solutions while improving planning certainty for shipping operators.

With this measure, the Panama Canal is positioning itself as an active participant in the maritime energy transition, using its reservation system to create practical incentives for more sustainable vessel operations and to help move global shipping toward a lower-emission future.
