The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) commemorated 26 years under Panamanian administration, marking another anniversary since the historic transfer of the waterway on December 31, 1999. The milestone highlights Panama’s continued ability to successfully manage one of the world’s most strategic maritime routes while reinforcing national sovereignty and pride.

According to the ACP, the Panama Canal has become a cornerstone of national development over the past 26 years, delivering measurable benefits to Panama’s economy, contributing to the well-being of its people, and strengthening the country’s relevance in the global maritime industry.

Among the key achievements highlighted by the Authority is the 2016 Canal Expansion, which transformed the route’s capacity by allowing the transit of larger vessels and improving the competitiveness of the Panama route in international trade. The ACP also noted that, over 26 years of Panamanian administration, the Canal has contributed more than B/. 31.231 billion to Panama’s National Treasury, supporting broader economic and social development across the country.

The Authority also emphasized its forward-looking agenda. In 2025, the ACP presented a roadmap for the coming decade that includes strategic initiatives such as the Energy Corridor, port improvements, and systems designed to strengthen water security for both Canal operations and the Panamanian population. At the same time, the Canal reaffirmed its commitment to innovation and sustainability through programs aimed at optimizing water use, reducing emissions, and increasing resilience to climate change.

In addition, the ACP underscored its continued work in the Panama Canal Watershed, where it supports programs focused on water resource protection and improving the quality of life of surrounding communities. With this anniversary, the Panama Canal Authority reaffirmed its commitment to serving Panama and global trade while continuing to project itself as a strategic platform for the future.
