The Panama Canal has announced that it will maintain the current maximum authorized draft for Neopanamax vessels at 48 feet, following its latest assessment of Gatún Lake levels and updated weather projections. The decision provides greater operational continuity for shipping companies using the interoceanic route.

The previously announced reduction to 47.5 feet, which had been scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2026, has now been postponed until further notice. The Canal Authority said current hydrological and meteorological conditions support maintaining the existing draft limit rather than proceeding with the planned restriction.

According to the Panama Canal, keeping the 48-foot draft in place gives customers greater predictability when planning voyages and scheduling vessels. The decision also reflects the Canal’s strategy of adapting promptly to changing conditions while responding to customer needs without compromising the safety or efficiency of its operations.

The Authority will continue to closely monitor water availability, lake levels, and weather conditions across the Canal watershed. Any future changes that could affect vessel draft requirements will be communicated to customers with sufficient advance notice to support effective operational planning.

Through this ongoing monitoring process, the Panama Canal aims to maintain a reliable, predictable, and efficient service for the global maritime industry while balancing commercial requirements with responsible water management and safe navigation.
