The Panama Canal marked a major milestone with the inaugural transit of the Disney Adventure, which became the largest and highest-capacity Neopanamax cruise ship ever to pass through the waterway. The transit highlighted the Canal’s operational precision, efficiency, and continued importance as a key route for global maritime connectivity.

Operated by Disney Cruise Line, the vessel crossed the Canal as part of its positioning voyage. With 208,000 gross tons and capacity for approximately 6,700 passengers, the Disney Adventure set a new record for the largest passenger ship by capacity and gross tonnage to transit the interoceanic route.

In recognition of the inaugural passage, Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales presented a commemorative plaque to the ship as it transited the Agua Clara Locks in Colón. The operation underscored the Canal’s ability to handle large-scale vessel movements with a high level of coordination, reliability, and safety. Measuring 342 meters in length and 46.4 meters in beam, the ship required extensive multidisciplinary planning to complete the transit successfully.

The event also reinforced the Panama Canal’s value to the cruise sector and its role in supporting global tourism itineraries. According to the Canal Authority, the Disney Adventure is one of five cruise ships making their inaugural transits during the 2025–2026 cruise season, alongside AIDAdiva, Brilliant Lady, Celebrity Ascent, and Star Seeker. For fiscal year 2026, the Canal expects more than 40 Neopanamax cruise ship transits.

The new benchmark surpasses the previous record held by Norwegian Bliss, which had capacity for 5,000 passengers and 168,000 gross tons. The Disney Adventure exceeds that mark by approximately 24%, or around 40,000 gross tons. Added to the Disney fleet in 2025, the vessel was built at the Meyer Werft shipyards in Germany and is homeported in Singapore, where it operates three- and four-night itineraries at sea.
