The Panama Canal has once again been recognized among the most responsible organizations in Panama, according to the Merco ESG Responsibility 2025 ranking, which evaluates companies based on environmental, social, and governance criteria. The recognition highlights the Canal’s continued commitment to sustainability, transparency, and social responsibility, further strengthening its position as a regional benchmark in responsible management.
According to the Panama Canal Authority, this distinction reflects the institution’s long-term efforts to operate under high standards of ethics, governance, and accountability. May Jane Coulson, Ethics Officer and Administrative Management Manager at the Panama Canal, said the organization has built a culture over the past 25 years of Panamanian administration based on commitment, a genuine interest in doing things properly, respect for the law, and consideration for all people and stakeholders.
Coulson also noted that the Canal’s standing in the Merco ranking as one of the country’s most responsible organizations is the result of sustained effort and a values-driven approach. She emphasized that transparency and ethics guide every decision and project, with the goal of ensuring a reliable, sustainable interoceanic route aligned with the highest governance standards.
The Panama Canal Authority reaffirmed that it will continue promoting responsible practices that support its mission of contributing sustainably to Panama’s prosperity, underscoring the Canal’s broader role not only as a strategic maritime route, but also as a model of institutional responsibility and long-term sustainability.
