Panama has launched the first phase of its new Electronic Vessel Registry (REN) system as part of a broader effort by the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) to modernize maritime administration and improve efficiency across the ship registration process. The initiative is designed to streamline operations and strengthen Panama’s competitiveness as one of the world’s leading flag states.

According to the report, the REN platform will unify the management systems of the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine (DGMM) and the Public Registry of Ship Ownership of Panama (DGRPN), the two entities responsible for handling vessel documentation, property titles, mortgages, and naval liens. By integrating these functions into a single web-based system, Panama aims to simplify procedures for both domestic and international users.

The AMP said the electronic registry was developed through a trial-and-test approach to ensure that the platform responds effectively to the practical needs of the shipping industry. Officials noted that the system will continue evolving as new functions are introduced to support more efficient maritime operations and reduce administrative bottlenecks.

Marta Aparicio, Head of the Public Registry of Ship Ownership of Panama, said the objective is to eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy and deliver a higher standard of service to users. Ramón Franco, Director General of the Merchant Marine and Ship Registry at the AMP, added that the digital tools are expected to significantly improve response times and tracking processes for vessel registration in Panama.

With the rollout of the REN system, Panama continues advancing its digital transformation agenda in the maritime sector, reinforcing its position as a key international shipping registry while aiming to provide faster, more transparent, and more user-friendly services to the global maritime community.
