The symbolic planting of the 5 millionth tree through the Panama Canal Environmental Economic Incentives Program (PIEA) at the Canal Administration Building marked a significant occasion. Over the past 21 years, around five million trees have been planted in the Hydrographic Basin, reflecting one tree for each Panamanian, primarily aimed at environmental protection and water resource preservation. The planting of the milestone Jacaranda Caucana species tree signifies an extraordinary achievement. The PIEA has facilitated the reforestation of 10,846 hectares, addressing the Canal’s constitutional responsibility for water resource administration, maintenance, use, and conservation. This effort includes agroforestry and silvopastoral components, with community participation playing a crucial role. Organized communities have been supplying seedlings since 2020, producing 367,000 seedlings to date and generating income of approximately B/. 220,000. The program emphasizes sustainable development across social, economic, and environmental dimensions, aiming to improve production systems, transmit knowledge, enhance socioeconomic conditions, and protect soils and water resources. The Canal’s communities in the Basin are vital partners in water conservation, contributing to environmental care and ensuring water availability for local needs and consumption by a significant portion of the country’s population and the operation of essential infrastructure.
