Wabtec Corporation (NYSE: WAB) and its Latin American Channel Partner, Marinsa International, have recently inked an agreement to provide primary power for 10 new hybrid tractor tugboats commissioned by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). As part of the deal, Wabtec will supply two 8L250MDA marine engines for each tugboat, ensuring optimal availability with the lowest life-cycle cost for vessel operators.

Expressing enthusiasm about this collaboration, Tammy Gromacki, Wabtec’s Vice President of Marine, Stationary, and Drill, stated, “Wabtec is thrilled to supply power to the new hybrid Panama Canal tugs with the 8L250MDA marine engines.” She further expressed honor in continuing to serve this vital customer and acknowledged the critical role they play in facilitating global trade through the partnership with Marinsa.

The 30-meter tugboats are equipped with hybrid-electric propulsion to minimize emissions during ship towage in Panamanian ports and throughout the canal. The new 8L250MDA main engines adhere to ABS classification and meet IMO Tier II emissions standards. These engines boast an operational span of approximately 60,000 hours before overhaul when adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule.

Adrian Walchli, President of Marinsa International, highlighted their enduring commitment to excellence and innovation in maritime solutions as the longest-operating Channel Partner of Wabtec marine engines. He pledged unwavering service support during the construction phase at the Astilleros Armón shipyard in Navia, Spain, and extended their dedication to supporting the operating fleet in Panama. The tugboats, owned and operated by the ACP, will be constructed in Spain, with Wabtec engines manufactured at its Grove City, Pennsylvania plant. This contract marks the fourth order of Wabtec marine diesel engines to power the ACP fleet.
