Panama’s Minister for Canal Affairs, José Ramón Icaza, outlined the key projects shaping the future of the Panama Canal during his keynote address at the 10th International Financial Summit in Panama. His remarks highlighted the Canal’s evolving strategy to strengthen water sustainability, expand logistics services, and reinforce the long-term value of the Panama route.

Icaza emphasized that, over the past 25 years, the Canal has stood as a model of responsible management, delivering a direct contribution to Panama’s development while maintaining its central role in global maritime trade. He also noted that the Canal’s direct operations, together with the industries it supports, account for 2.9% of Panama’s GDP, generating employment and strengthening public finances that contribute to the country’s social progress.

As part of the Canal’s long-term vision, Icaza pointed to several major projects, including the Río Indio Reservoir Project and the planned development of new port infrastructure. Among the projects mentioned were terminals at Corozal on the Pacific side and Telfers Island on the Atlantic side, as Panama seeks to expand port capacity and respond to growing container demand. According to Icaza, port activity is nearing its operational limits, while container volumes could increase from 9.7 million TEUs in 2024 to as much as 15 million TEUs.

He also highlighted progress on the Canal’s proposed gas pipeline, an initiative designed to capture opportunities linked to the global expansion of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and other hydrocarbon trades. The project is intended to diversify the interoceanic waterway’s logistics and transportation business, with an estimated value ranging from $4 billion to $8 billion, depending on the final business model adopted.

Taken together, these initiatives reflect the Panama Canal’s broader effort to enhance its logistics platform, expand capacity, and strengthen Panama’s position as a strategic hub for international trade and maritime connectivity.
