The Panama Canal Authority has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Ports and Airports of the Federative Republic of Brazil to establish a cooperation alliance focused on the exchange of information and experience in port management, maritime and inland waterway logistics, and knowledge transfer related to the operation of the Panama Canal and the trade opportunities it offers.
The agreement was signed in Panama by Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales and in Brazil by Silvio Serafim Costa Filho, Minister of Ports and Airports, in the presence of President José Raúl Mulino and Minister for Canal Affairs José Ramón Icaza.
According to the Panama Canal Authority, the cooperation framework is expected to support the exploration of new routes for Brazilian maritime transport, the optimization of export costs, the analysis of the impact of decarbonization measures promoted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the evaluation of more sustainable routes from an economic, social, and environmental perspective.
Minister José Ramón Icaza said the memorandum reflects the strong potential for cooperation and shared growth between Brazil and Panama, especially in the context of expanding bilateral trade and advancing joint efforts in modernization, sustainability, and competitiveness. He added that these initiatives can generate value not only for both countries, but also for regional and global trade.
With this agreement, the Panama Canal further strengthens its international partnerships while reinforcing its role as a strategic logistics platform that supports more efficient, competitive, and sustainable maritime trade.
